The real problem

The CPC exam isn't hard. Walking in unprepared is.

The CPC exam covers a wide span of material in one open-book, time-pressured sitting — medical terminology, anatomy, evaluation & management, surgery by body system, radiology, pathology and laboratory, medicine, ICD-10-CM diagnosis coding, HCPCS Level II, and compliance rules like NCCI edits. Being able to look answers up in your manuals doesn't help if you don't already know where to look.

Field note

Most candidates who struggle didn't struggle on any single domain — they ran out of time flipping through manuals for terms they never drilled.

And a failed attempt costs real money and time — another $425+ voucher, another AAPC membership year, another wait before you can start coding professionally.

Passing on the first attempt rewards exactly one thing: enough repetition on real content-outline concepts that recognition is instant, not looked up. That's the whole idea behind this site.

FAQ

Straight answers

What is the CPC exam?+

The CPC (Certified Professional Coder) exam is AAPC's core medical coding certification exam: 100 multiple-choice questions across medical terminology, anatomy, evaluation & management, surgery by body system, radiology, pathology/laboratory, medicine, ICD-10-CM diagnosis coding, HCPCS Level II, and compliance topics, given in a 4-hour open-book session.

What score do I need to pass the CPC exam?+

AAPC requires a score of 70% or higher — at least 70 of the 100 questions correct — to pass the CPC exam.

Is the CPC exam open book?+

Yes. You may bring approved current-year CPT, ICD-10-CM, and HCPCS Level II manuals into the testing room. No other study guides, annotated "expert" editions, or electronic devices are allowed.

What is CPC-A and how is it different from CPC?+

If you pass the exam without two years of verified on-the-job coding experience, AAPC awards the CPC-A (Apprentice) credential instead of full CPC. There are three published pathways to remove the "A": two years of verified coding experience, one year of experience plus AAPC's 80-hour course or Practicode, or completing 600 real-world Practicode cases with a 70%+ score.

How much does the CPC exam cost?+

AAPC's core-exam voucher (which covers the CPC) is $425 for one attempt or $499 for two attempts, with student pricing at $400 and $475. You also need an active AAPC membership, priced around $229 a year, to sit for the exam. Confirm current pricing on aapc.com before you register.

Is the practice quiz on this site the real CPC exam?+

No. This is an independent practice tool built from the publicly described CPC exam content outline. It is not produced, administered, or endorsed by AAPC, and it never reproduces real or past exam questions.
